Carabinieri and Sogin renew the memorandum of understanding for the management of orphan radioactive sources

19 July 2018
This morning the Commander of the Carabinieri Environmental Protection Section, Sergio Pascali, and the Chief Executive Officer of Sogin, Luca Desiata, signed the extension of the Memorandum of Understanding aimed at collaborating in the operations of recovery and securing orphan radioactive sources. The Memorandum, with a three-year duration, has reached its second renewal. Specifically, it provides that, at the request of the competent authorities, the Carabinieri Environmental Protection Section is supported by Sogin to evaluate the best ways to manage orphan radioactive sources.

The competent authority may also make recourse to Sogin to plan, coordinate and carry out the transport and securing of radioactive waste, including that deriving from the personal protective equipment used during joint operations. “We are proud – said Luca Desiata, Chief Executive Officer of Sogin – of this renewed collaboration with the Environmental Protection Section of the Carabinieri, which has been in place for six years. It is a recognition of our professionalism and our daily commitment to ensure the safety of citizens and the protection of the environment in the sensitive sector of radioactive waste management”.

“We are particularly pleased – said Gen. B. Sergio Pascali, Commander of the Carabinieri Environmental Protection Section – to renew once again with Sogin, a company that has always been committed to environmental protection, the agreement for the safety of radioactive sources, for staff training and for agreeing guidelines aimed at planning the transport and safety of radioactive waste.”
